Catholics believe that if you are not good enough to go to Heaven but not Bad enough to go to Hell that you will end up in Purgatory where your family and friends can pay you out of Purgatory into heaven. There is no support for this belief in the Bible. Besides the fact that we don't go to Heaven or Hell based on how good or bad we are in life. If it was determined by our behaviour then none of us would qualify to go to Heaven because all of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The Bible says that all of our WORKS are just filthy rags in God's eyes. Let's say that you sin on an average of 3 times per day. (For most it's closer to 300 times per day) 3 times a day and let's say you are 40 years old that means that you have sinned 43,800 times. What could you possibly do that would make up for that? If you went before a judge after committing 43,000 crimes and you said, "But judge, I went to confession and I gave to the poor and I went to church every Sunday, and I gave up smoking and drinking.." Would it matter? You've committed 43,000 crimes!! So, how do we get to Heaven? God in his mercy gave us a very simple plan for salvation.

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed

Is when a person's soul is not completely clean to enter heaven. However, the person isn't evil and doesn't deserve to go to hell becuase he/she committed venial sins not mortal ones. That person would go to purgatory where they are purified by taking a punishment. This is only temporary and when they are completely clean, they may ascend to heaven. This is what the Catholic Church believes and many other religions. I'm Catholic and I believe this completely. Heaven and Hell is just too simplistic and I always thought there was something else where most people would go. Remember that nothing dirty can enter heaven so what do with do with the souls of those who aren't evil but not completely good? Do they go to hell just because they lie or didn't go to church that much? I think purgatory is a good option and that it exists.

Purgatory is a place belived where the spirts of minor sinners go instead of Hell, giving them a chance to go to Heaven. In order for them to get into Heaven, it's believed that people living on earth have to pray for them to get to Heaven. It's not as bad as Hell, but not as good as heaven.

Purgatory, in Pagansim, is the 9th plane of existence where Murphy's law runs rampant; Anything that could go wrong, can go wrong, and DOES go wrong. It is where you are placed for 1,000 years' punishment before you are released.

It's similar to the christian hell, except theirs provides no way out.

It is the Christian belief of a place that souls are held while they wait to be judged on where they are going: Heaven or Hell. There is a big debate on whether or not it exists (as much as anything in the christian dogma does) because many religious figures dismiss it.

Purgatory is a lie about a place were people go after they die and their relatives pay priests to light candles and say masses to get them into heaven. There is no basis for this in Scripture. When you die you either go to hell to await judgment or heaven. That's it.

if Hell was a corporation, purgatory would be the waiting room.
Its where you are stuck until you go up or down.

It is the catholic-specific notion for those that aren't quite bad enough for hell, but aren't good enough for heaven. Scott Adams created a character based on this. "Phil the ruler of Heck" (for sinners whose transgressions aren't serious enough for Hell)
