It should be instinctual but if not try to leave the cat with the litter box in an enclosed space, kitchen or bath for the time that you leave for work. It sounds mean but it's fine. Of course, leave their water and food and maybe somewhere soft so sleep on if the floor is cold.
Uncovered litter boxes work better at first and then you can cover them once he/she realizes what it is. A couple of times should work. It's ideal if you do this in the room where the litter box will be staying, otherwise you can slowly move the box to where it is going to be over the course of a day or two.
Since accidents do happen, Pet stores sell a very effective enzyme product that deters the animal from marking spots again and again. Spaying and neutering is a must also. Hope that helped.

The natural instinct especially for a Cat is to BURY waste.
PICK THE KITTEN UP after meals, drinking, etc, and CARRY IT to the litter. It will amaze you how rapidly SCHEDULING will be replaced NATURALLY. Also allow access in an area that YOU are comfortable with in LEAVING the Litter There, and the cat KNOWS that they don't have to HUNT for a place to ELIMINATE.

Trust me, its not impossible. You just need to physically put your cat in the litter box several times a day and ALWAYS immediately after you find him or her going somewhere else. Also if you find some poop elsewhere put it in the litter box so your kitten will smell it in there and it will help it to understand what you want it to do.

I never had a problem. Cats are clean animals and they usually learn this very easy. If your cat has a problem, take him to a vet.
Make sure that the litterbox is always clean. Many cats don't use it simply because their owner does not clean it twice a day. Make sure not to feed the cat anywhere near the litterbox.
Straight after food put the cat in the litterbox and wait. Praise him.
