I have a rusted freeze plug that sits on the cylinder head behind the exhaust mainfold, which means they will have to take the engine out to change the plug. Funny- a $10 plug costs almost $1000 in labor.

Anyway, I heard Bares Stop Leak might work, but I was wondering how feasible it would be to use if any have tried it in a similar situation.

no, you may do it in situ or at the worst case the head has to come off.

Freeze Plug Stop Leak

It will plug the radiator and heater core. The core plug is not a fun thing to change, and I would shop around. When this happened on my truck, me and a friend had to jack up the engine and pop it out with a punch. There are several types to choose from, the expansion one is the easiest, but the original ones are more permanent.
The motor didn't have to come all the way out either. Just a few inches as it was right above a motor mount. Hope this helps.

It won't. The rust will still be there and the hole will keep getting bigger. And I've never heard of removing an engine for a freeze plug, perhaps the manifold, but not the engine. Ask at another mechanic shop and see if you get the same answer. Even the labor charge for R & R sounds a bit high to me.

Bar's Stop leak may get you by while you are driving it to the shop. While there are cases of having to pull the head, the only ones requiring the engine to be pulled are in the rear of the block. I would get another estimate and get the plug replaced.

BARS IS ONE OF THE BEST STOP LEAK CHEMICALS THERE IS BUT KEEP IN MIND IT MAY PLUG UP OTHER THINGS YOU DONT WANT PLUGGED UP IF YOU HAVE A HEAVY CORROSION PROBLEM,LIKE HEATER CORE,RADIATOR CORE,THERMOSTAT. STOP LEAKS ARE A TEMPORARY FIX IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION MEANT TO GET YOU HOME AND TO A SHOP SO YOR CAR CAN BE PROPERLY REPAIRED,THEN THE GOO YA PUT IN IS FLUSHED OUT. SO GOOD LUCK I KNOW IT SEEMS LIKE AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR NOW...BUT THINK IF YOU HAVE TO START FIXIN OTHER STUFF ON TOP OF THE BAD FREEZE PLUG.

Save your money on the bars and replace the freeze plug.
