No, unless you win the diversity lottery, which 50,000 people do win every year, allowing them to bring in spouses and minor children as well.

Otherwise you need a job and/or a bank account. You need to show you could support whatever family you have and will not raise them on our welfare services, etc.

YES. they don't just hand those out.

although -- you could try to get one thru what is called THE GREEN CARD LOTTERY. but depending upon what country you are from determines how many are alloted. it fluctuates every year. i've know two people who have actually gotten one this way. at first i thought it was a scam until i met them.

the other way is to marry someone here. not always the best option.

another way is to get connected with a company that wants to employ you and is willing to work with you on setting it all up.

and still another way is to do an internship here with a company that sets these up thru a j-1 visa sponsor. there are several agents around the world that do this for you thru a sponsor. the us state department only authorizes so many sponsors to administer this program. best to work directly with one of them as it cuts out the fees that a middleman agent would charge to you. these internships are usually about a 9 mos. stay or could be more or less depending upon which program you choose.
