I need an engine for a 78 VW Beetle, either complete or longblock. I'd prefer one from the east coast or mid-west so that I can go pick it up. Any sugestions?

As far as shops make sure you search for quality as one of your top things on your list, it may cost more up front, but no since buying junk. As well get if you don't know anything along the way, stop and ask make sure you get what you need:

For a listing of shops:

http://www.hotvws.com/ - You all ways find ads in there every month from the bigger companies (not all ways the best shops), so make sure you do your research about them first) : http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewforum.php?f=14

if you wanted to go cheap, id check out junkyards. and then you could buy a complete rebuild kit to make all the internals fresh.
