You need two different approaches. First approach is to get the kid's family hooked up with services that will make the home life better. Food, rent assistance, stuff like that. He can't concentrate on school if he's worried about his family starving and ending up on the street. And if his belly is rumbling he's not going to have the energy to concerntrate on school. School social workers are good resources for finding services.
Then, stress that a good education will raise him up out of that situation. Give him some age-appropriate biographies about people who have made it out of situations like his by studying hard. Try to avoid the sports biographies... every kid rich or poor who doesn't do well in school thinks they're gonna make it by being a sports star.
Let him know that with a good education he can also help his family up and out, too.
Good luck! :)

It's a shame to have to think about food. Money is another matter. Some people never get enough. I would get the kid's family a gift card to a grocery store nearby. ANY amount would help if you are hungry or just buy a big laundry basket and fill it with food, put a bow on it and a note that says Merry Christmas from SANTA.(Let them know where it's from though or have the store deliver it. I wouldnt eat something I found on my doorstep) maybe you can help tutor him once his belly is full and that will help him in the right direction too, plus make a new friend, give him some self-esteem, etc. God Bless

how bout explaining that education leads to money ,money buys food but make him always keep in mind that money is a tool a means to an end and should never be a primary goal because as many have proven when this world is done with you all your money wont another minute buy and when youve made good never forget all the folks who did without in order to get you were you are no man is an island .

Get the food off his mind. Make sure there is enough food. Let him know to have a lot of money in the future you need to have a good education NOW.

Caring people have been looking for a good answer to that question for a long time. Poverty is a complex thing and sometimes charity works to make it worse. If you have a particular kid in mind you might want to devote yourself to reaching out to them and meeting their needs while you direct them toward self-improvement. Working with the poor is frustrating in many ways.

Give a man a fish-you feed him for the day. Teach a man to fish- you feed him for a lifetime.
Teach him the long term benefits of an education...
Hope that helps

You would have to stress that Education is the way out of his situation and that by doing well in school he would be able to do well in the work force. Good luck with it.

you can't. First thing in Maslow's hierarchy says that we must have our basic needs satisfied before we can move to the next level, that of food, shelter and love. Then when these needs are met you can move onto higher level thinking.

That's sad....Fill up his tummy and use math (money) as lessons to learn! I fhe feels power over the situation, like he can help, it will be more productive to him than worrying.

You can feed him, clothe him, and then you will have a better chance. Use people who have overcome poverty & made it big to prove that he can be sombody one day.
