She vomited and had diarhea for a bit, but she is hypoglycemic and had a reaction. We got her blood sugar up by rubbing honey on her gums but she doesnt want to eat. I put chicken broth in her eukenuba and she won't eat it. She is feeling better (about 10 hours since she vomited last), but seems weak. Are we in the clear toxicity wise? I will dropper feed her if she doesnt eat or drink soon I'm worried about dehydration...any suggestions would be helpful. I don't have much money for a big vet bill this close to christmas. Thanks.

Thank you all...I'm aware chocolate is poison for dogs. It was milk chocolate, and she did not eat the foil (she spit that out). I'll call her vet and get advice. I appreciate all the suggestions.

She'll *probably* be okay toxicity-wise, but we can't say that for certain over the internet. You're right to be worried about dehydration.

Because both chocolate and dehydration can kill, I can't really recommend anything less than a vet visit. The good news is that it probably won't be nearly as expensive as you fear -- most vets care more about animals than about their pockets (Don't you wish more doctors were the same?) and even if it does cost too much they'll usually at least work out a payment plan for you.

My vet only charges $30 -- I'm not rich but even I can manage that much to take care of my dear pets. Give yours a call first. Calls are always free.

Get to the vet A.S.A.P., this is poisoners to dogs., being so small it is a big danger even if she seems better. Her next step might be seizures. Try to work out a plan with your vet or any vet! This is an emergency!!
I have been a vet tech for a long time. Please don't think about the money, I know It is hard-beg borrow or steel but get to the vet. Lot of Love to All

It's a toxin so it can acted slow like a poison, even if the symptoms go away, so I'd still take her to a vet to make sure, but if you dont have the huge amount of money to take her to a vet (trust me, I know!) just call them and ask if she'll be okay and what to do. Normally they won't charge for that. Good Luck.

Chocolate is deadly to dogs. The best thing you can do for your dog is to immediatedly take her to the vet. It sounds like the reason she's acting this way is because of a reaction to the chocolate. If you can't afford a vet, alot of them accept payment plans.

Well, I AM glad, m'dear, that you DID wake up! Otherwise, you would not have been able to share your wonderful experience with us. Currently, it is 5am, and I cannot for the life of me SLEEP. It's not for the want of sleep, it's not for the lack of trying. I simply cannot sleep. I will now spend the rest of the day being tired, hoping that I do not fall asleep behind the wheel, or some other critical point in my day. Oh for the luxury of a sound night's sleep!!!!!!!!! Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

Try giving her lots of water, and tons of her own dog food...hopefully you can flush it out of her system. If it was DARK chocolate..it is alot worse and dogs have been known to die from it. Especially smaller breeds. I know its a tough time of the year when it comes to finances..but I HIGHLY recommend seeing a vet within the next day or two if she is still sick. Perhaps ask if you can leave a deposit or a credit card number...or even collateral until you can pay off the vet bill.

did she eat the foil, too? may need x-rays. the problem with chocolate is how it affects the kidneys or liver, cn't remember which. make sure to ask a vet. get in touchwith your local humane society and ask what they recommend get in touch with your local (if you have one, or google Guelph University in Ontario, Canada, the oldest veterinary school in north america)veterinary school and see what they recommend.
keep the chocolate up high, eh!
have a very happy christmas
