No, you can't lose belly weight only by doing ab exercises. The exercises will certainly strengthen the abs muscles, but to lose the fat that is on top of the muscles you have to lose weight overall. There is no such thing as "spot reduction". The only way to do that would be through something drastic such as liposuction.

You lose weight all over your body, not just in one area, but the ab exercises will tighten your belly muscles and make it appear that you have lost weight there.

No dancing and swimming are other great ways to lose that belly fat, also eating plenty protein and fiber.. as well as drinking water there are situps that you can do, but put your feet as close to your butt as you can and then do a sit up this helps alot better as it then makes you have to uses your abs more better and also is not so hard to do a sit up if you do it that way I have learned that now and have lost 7 pds.. in a week by doing that and its in my belly legs and arms....

No.
You can spot tone an area, but you can't spot lose fat.

Exercising a particular area of the body tones it, strengthens and enlarges the muscle, but fat is only reduced when your caloric burn is greater than your caloric intake. Your body then burns its excess fat and you begin to lose it, but you lose it in a predetermined order that has nothing to do with your specific exercise program, or anything that you do for that matter.

When your caloric intake is greater than your burn, you put on fat, and I'm sure that you've noticed that certain areas of your body seem to put on fat before others. When your caloric output is greater than your intake, you begin to lose fat --- and you'll lose it in areas according to what your metabolism dictates, usually in reverse order; that is, the last place that you put it on is the first place that will reduce and the first place that you put it on will be the hardest place to get fit, and it doesn't matter, in terms of reducing fat, what area of the body you are specifically exercising.

The exercise itself does two things. It strengthens and enlarges the muscles in the specific area and increases your caloric burn. By increasing your caloric burn you will lose fat, BUT in your metabolism's predetermined order, not according to your wishes. So, you can strengthen the ab muscles by exercising them, but you won't lose any more fat in that area by doing the ab exercises than if you did, for example, pushups. And remember, even if you're exercising, you'll still put on fat if you're eating more than you're burning. So, you can have strong abs that are covered by a layer of fat.

That's why folks do cardio, because cardio not only strengthens the heart muscle but it provides you with your highest caloric burn.

Keep in mind too that muscle weighs more than fat, so as you replace fat with muscle you will actually gain weight, but it is good weight; also, muscle burns fat, so that increase in muscle mass will provide you with more calorie burn naturally, even while you're resting.

The best program that you can adopt is one that includes cardio and some type of overall strengthening program for your muscles and bones. Strengthening the muscles and bones is particularly important as you get older.

This will no doubt be more of a time investment than you were hoping for, but it is time well spent and you'll feel the difference.

Good luck.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

No. Stomach fat is mostly diet. I lift weights and whenever I go to the gym I see huge guys with huge muscles who do hundreds of reps for their stomachs: they still have big guts.

wouldn'te we all love to get rid of the belly pouch :) unfortunately, you can't "spot reduce" one area of your body. to really burn the fat around your belly, focus on your overall cardio training and really watch your diet...get rid of the refined sugars, caffeine, salt, and excess fat intake (you do need *some*fat) and try increasing your water intake to make sure you're getting 8-10 glasses a day. it's tough to do, but totally possible. good luck with your fitness goal!
