Viral diarrhea usually causes frequent watery stools, whereas blood stained diarrhea may be indicative of bacterial colitis. In some cases, even when the stomach is empty, bile can be vomited up.
From the symptoms, it is seen that your mom is not suffering from stomach flu. Consult a Gastroenterologist.

The ABC symptoms
A slow-moving digestive system may be the cause of your Chronic Constipation or Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation. It can result in what we call the ABC symptoms:

It sounds as though your mom has constipation. Nothing worse than that. She needs to see a doctor, or use her usual home remedy for constipation. I use a glass of boiled water that has cooled a little and sip slowly on that. Plus prune juice first.

Don't worry. It's not contagious.

if she is not vomiting blood, has a fever, and/or having blood in the stool accompanied by severe imparing cramps: IF SHE DOES NOT EXHIBIT THESE SYMPTOMS, she will probably be just fine. when was her last bowel movement? sounds like constipation to me. if she IS having any of the above symptoms, she should go to the emergency room. use your common sense and best judgement.

i'd go with the constipation theory too. if she can't handle the icky taste of prune juice, bananas will also act as a laxative, just not as quickly. if fruit is out of the question, my mother-in-law's favorite constipation cure is oreo cookies, and, believe it or not, they work like a charm.

Just don't touch her poo and don't spread saliva, The stomach flu is easy to get but also easy to avoid. Merry Christmas and I hope your mom feels better soon.
