Dogs have a wonderful memory. They can often remember someone whom they haven't seen in years; and they can have phobias due to traumatic experiences as a pup. For example, for years, my parents had a dog. I moved out of the house and when I came back to visit about three years later he clearly remembered me, even though they weren't home to greet me and tell him it was okay. He was a guard dog, so if he hadn't remembered me, he'd have sure let me know it!
The person who used training bad habits as an example of bad memory brings up a good point, but I believe is interpreting it wrongly. You must correct a dog instantly when it does something it's not supposed to, she's right about that, but it's not because he doesn't remember -- it's because he will not otherwise *associate* the punishment to the crime. He knows he peed on the rug, and he knows you're mad at him, but he does NOT know you're mad at him because he peed on the rug. You see? They don't associate as easily as we do, but that's a different issue.

Really dogs don't have that good of a memory they only remember thigs that are repeted often like when you train them things they remember them because it is something they heard often and it stuck in their head but mostly they have short term memory. like if you left the house and they happen to do something while you were gone. when you returned home and found out what they did. It would have been too long ago the wouldn't remember doing it. That is why when your traing your dog to go outside to use bathroom it is important to catch them in the process or shortly after the have used the bathroom because dogs memories arent that great. In order for dogs to remember this those things have to be said or did often. over time your dog will remember what it has learned what but if something was to happen now that has never happened before, don't expect your dog to remember it three hours from now..

im not sure about all dogs, but i can say i think my dog did.the neighbor s next door had 2 boys who used to tease and throw rocks at my dog thru the fence.years later, she was old and both boys went off to college.they came back on winter vacation and stopped by my house to say hello(they reformed over the years)but when they tried to come in,the dog went ballistic and tried to bite them.even tho they were grown and had been away, she remembered them!she never acted that way toward anyone else,so i assume she remembered and disliked them.

Very good! They are much smarter than people give them credit for! My parents' dog still remembers me and I go home only once or twice a year. Byt he remembers I always walk him so he leads me straight to the leash.
