For the same reason that you put hot water in a thermos before putting in coffee, or put cold water in a thermos before putting in a cold beverage. To bring the container nearer to the temperature of the beverage so it will stay at temperature longer and not be cooled or heated by the container. A cold teapot that has not been warmed will drop the temperature of the hot water being used to steep tea if the pot has not been pre-warmed.

My gram always did. Again as others said, to warm the pot. That keeps the water more at boiling as it is poured in.
The tea tastes richer that way, in my opininon. I use a heat proof imported pot, and still have the habit of giving it a warming splash, though in it I really notice little difference.
And my personal message until the BIG day:
A Merrily barking mad, wickedly happy Christmas to everyone who celebrates!

If you put the water into a cold pot, the water would be slightly cooler. When you add water to the tea leaves it should be as hot as possible to brew the tea leaves better and make a better cuppa

To make sure that the water from the kettle stays as hot as possible to help the tea infuse. I only warm the teapot when I use lose leaf tea, when it's tea bags I don't bother as the leaf is much finer.

to keep the tea hot .although my gram always uses two pots one to brew the tea and the other that she strains the tea into after brewing so while the tea is brewing the other pot was heating up,so that the tea stays hot for a while longer

The same reason you put boiling water inside a thermos to heat it up before you put the actual heated liquid or food into it. It will heat it up and then help it retain the heat of the product put inside it.

it is purely for scientific reasons. to make it more hyegenic, boiling water kills germs which remain in and outside the surface of the tea pot. if it is belief, doesn't matter. trust me, even some scientific beliefs are created in name of god so that people will believe them and follow certain good habits. cheers!!
