Hi Sreedhar..I feel mainframe will be a good option. .Net can evolve and change tomorrow and accordingly demands can also change.

Mainframe and AS400 are two filed which are worth taking up a course in. Today also companies face shortage of people in these technologies. I work in AS400 platform and i have seen the demand here.

There is a good institute called S-cube or soemthing in TVM itself. Some of my colleagues have studied there are currently placed very well.

It may cost u, but definitely its worth what u spend. I can guarantee you that. :-)

U need not have the feeling that only maintenance work will come to u..U have enhancements also done in mainframes which are ofcourse development projects. Its a highly stable field also. It takes the most out of you and doesn't provide you everything at ur doorstep as MS does.

Finally its ur desire what to choose.
