Because police work is far more than just about fighting crime. It is about providing a community service to ensure safety and the security of property by preserving the peace and upholding the law. Policing is about making a positive contribution to society and ensuring that the community we live in is safer and more secure. Policing is not a career choice, but a life choice. Policing may be taxing, but the rewards are incredible.
There are other benefits too that contribute to making this profession so rewarding. Consider the fact that no two days are the same and that the tasks at hand require an extreme level of both mental and physical stamina. Its an opportunity to get involved in a work environment that is ever changing and requires the ability to adapt. Plus there are career-related motives to being an officer too, like excellent pay, benefits and great job security.

Not just the U.K but in all countries .
Its unfortunate but the very nature of the job attracts all the wrong people , every bully and authoritarian wants the power that being a policeman brings.
It is a well documented fact that among policemen can be found a far greater percentage of wife abusers than are found in the general public.
Having said that I should make it clear that not all policemen are bad , they are not all on the, take looking for that police discount, but even the good ones tend to change.

New Labour = previous Conservatives. there is not any distinction between Tories and Labour anymore, in basic terms cuts to public centers, unemployment and tax rises. The some distance maximum surprising have voted for the comparable regulations besides the place they have had councillors, so this is hypocritical of Crow to call for a vote for them. What i could % to work out is a radical new social gathering to symbolize the pastimes of the working classification, with democratically desperate regulations (New Labour's regulations are desperate by ability of cupboard, no longer the commerce unions, which might a minimum of be extra democratic - somewhat the management forget approximately approximately something this is in basic terms too left wing). i'm helping the commerce Union and Socialist Coalition interior the elections. i'm hoping it is going to likely be the commencing up of a extra wide left social gathering like Die Linke in Germany or Le Nouveau Partie Anticapitaliste in France. in the event that they'd do it there, we are able to do it right here too! See source decrease than. Mac the Knife - Labour toyed with the assumption of reformatory ships themselves, yet rejected it. you're maximum surprising that they do no longer plan a married guy or woman's tax allowance - yet whilst this is all which you would be able to arise with that separates the two events, then there is in basic terms approximately no distinction between them. the two could decrease centers and raise taxes to pay for the deficit. working classification people shouldn't would desire to pay for a economic disaster that became no longer of our making.

Hey - I'm a police officer in the UK and I joined to be of service to the public. With my qualifications (I have an MBA) I could earn a load more money in outside industry but I believe that policing is a vitally important job in protecting the weak and those who cannot stand up for themselves.
I joined to keep people safe, to be there for them when they need help, to protect them when they are in danger, to comfort them when they lose a loved one, to lock up bullies, thieves and rapists and to play my part in keeping our society free from tyranny of all sorts.
Hey man - I joined because I love the public, not because I hate them! I joined because I know what I believe in, and I wear my uniform everyday to show that I care.
I have colleagues who have died protecting the public, and I am prepared to do the same myself if the worst happens.
Can you say the same? Are you as proud of your job as I am of mine? Do you know what your values are?
Happy Christmas.

I've read all the answers, quite interesting. I'm a police officer so it amuses me what people's perceptions of us are.
I joined because I thougth I would be able to do a job which was non profit making and actually made a difference to society. Maybe next time you have to walk the streets at 3am in the freezing cold and then arrest a drunk for being disorderly only to have him urinate all over you or the next time you have to sit with a rape victim and inform her that you will need to take an oral swab from her for evidence only to have her burst into tears, you'll think of the people who are out there doing their best to keep you safe.
Incidently, when you and your family are up on christmas morning opening your prezzies, I'll have been up since 5am and in work at 7am!
But hey... the pension's great and the uniform is very kinky, so it's all good!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I don't suppose for one minute that people who join the Police Force do it because they hate the general public. Other reasons for joining the Police Force could be: Good Pension; Earlier Retirement Age; Reasonable Salary.

They have no mates and the force gives them ready made ones.
Shopkeepers and publicans give them presents.
They can drive about flouting the rules of the road. Don't start me off.(Pulled over on a motorway once to prevent a traffic police car that pulled out dangerously being crushed between two lorries and they gave us a Motorway 20 fixed penalty. They had quotas to fill)
They want to brush up their origami and paper aeroplane skills.
They get good discounts on cars and white goods.
Bossing around the young, minority groups and motorists appeals to them.
They can retire on a fat pension at 50 and go and live on the Costa del Sol.

I think a lot of people join the police force as a profession and in the beginning are enthusiastic in fighting crime unfortunately if they are appointed to a station with corrupt officers they have no alternative to either shut up or join in.
Did you never notice the most of the bully boys in the police have ridiculous sounding names? they were probably bullied at school.
