There were many groups of people who lived before Jesus came there were gentiles, Egyptians, Jews and so on and so forth.

But God’s chosen people were the Jews up until Jesus came in his ministry, then he open the door to all who would listen to the message of his father and obey his commandments.

According to the Apostle Paul, "election" is no longer just for the Jews, but in inclusive of all who trust in Jesus Christ.

So a Christian is anyone who is willing to follow Jesus Christ and act in a way that brings honor and glory to his name but most importantly accept Jesus as their savior.

The Jews were called the people of God. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So the Bible called us either Jew or Gentile.
Only after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ were Jews and Gentiles called Christians.

People saying "Jews" are under the false impression this religion has always existed. Jews are still Jews, Very few converted as Jesus was rejected by them just as Muhammad was rejected by Jews/Christians and Joseph Smith was rejected by all three.

They were pagans and then they were converted to the monotheistic religion. Non Jews were all called gentiles, still are.

If religion were true it would have always existed and there would only be one.

Considering the word Christian means follower of Christ, they weren't called anything.. there were no christians then.
Jesus was a Jew and taught as a Jew. He reached out to Jews. Paul was the one who allegedly reached out to the non-jews for "Salvation".

Christians were not called Christians until after His ascension. They were called little Christs at Antioch in the book of Acts. In other places in the Bible, followers of God were called followers of God or faithful servants.
