Your body continues to burn calories and use up energy while you sleep, and although it still produces waste, the waste weighs less than the mass burned for energy - so you lose weight. This is during a usual 8-hour (approximate) night, though. Catnaps really don't lose you the weight.

The faster your metabolism is will determine how much weight you will actually lose at rest, the more lean muscle mass you have will make you metabolism faster and you will burn more calories just resting, look at it this way : It takes no energy to keep fat alive, now muscle on the other hand needs to be kept alive with blood , nutrients, oxygen, and all other aspects to keep a healthy body alive. So yes you can lose weight while resting, but your metabolism will determine how much. If you look up BMR (basal metabolic rate) you can figure all this out , with the formulas you will find.
