when a stranger telephones my home by mistake(wrong number)i say sorry u have the wrong number,they say tutt ,and hang up,im sure this is some sort of role-reversal occuring here.

It is an empathetic reaction. Ideally you want good things for other people as well as yourself. When someone's goal is not met, you feel empathy for them. You feel bad when you make the mistake. You also feel for them when they make a mistake. It is polite to share in other's emotions. It's part of society. It's not a bad thing. Those who do not so share are similar to those who don't feel bad about murder or rape or other violent crimes. It is good to not be desensitised. Don't go too far. You don't need to empathize everything.

Even though I do not want to admit it, I (yes, I) have mis-dialed from time to time. I don't feel nearly the idiot when someone says "Sorry, you have the wrong number".

One time I talked with a mis-dialer for 45 minutes. He was at airport waiting for a plane, and I was at home wondering what to do next.
