On your return, you can only claim the number of dependents that you actually have, and must show their social security numbers.

If you're talking about your W-4, the form that determines how much is withheld from your paycheck for income taxes, you can claim a higher number than your actual return will have. You're only supposed to do that if you have other circumstances, such as itemized deductions, that will cause you to owe less tax. If you claim too many, you can end up with a big tax bill at the end of the year, plus possible penalties and interest.

The limits is who you can claim as a dependent. There are many rules about that. There is also a limit on how much you can take as a deduction (depending if you are rich or not). However, no limit on the actual amount of depedents you can TRY to claim.

Let's get real - In today's world, there aren't too many people with more than 3-4 dependents. People aren't having as many babies as in the old days.

At any rate, there is no "limit." But you definitely have to be sure that they meet the dependency test - there are certain rules that the government has set. For this test, see the link that I have provided below...

No limit that I am aware of. Turbo tax used to have a limit off 99. Still? However, the real limit is how many dependents you have.
