A very good question. As your questions states," If someone today said....." Saying is one thing, doing is another. To speak plainly, though, I believe that much of the Old Testament is written in a symbolical form and are stories, examples and lessons for us to figure out and follow. I am not saying that I believe that the occurances in the Bible are ficticious. I believe that everything Jesus did and what the older prophets did can be done by anyone who has the right training and who has developed themselves in the correct ways to work with and through the Laws that govern the operation of our world and cosmos.
I also believe we should not just blindly accept or follow anything but we should use our reason and discrimination to analyze and judge before we accept it,
There is much more that could be said here but this is not the time or place.

What is not to understand? They have a monopoly on truth based on a book written long ago by men who thought the world was flat and disease is caused by demons. Not only that, they believe it is a violation of their rights if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their superstitious beliefs down every ones throat. We just have to marginalize them, which may mean an all out war against institutionalized stupidity.

well danny, where there is distance in time, it's easier to believe the myths than when someone says that jesus just flew in from buffalo and landed on the beach at coney island, right? the myth is always easier to believe with distance and mystery.

Hi Danny,
Paul here from your question sorry if I offended you in the way I put it but sometimes I answer those who have no idea of God Jesus or the bible.
As to your first answer yes Jesus was severely persecuted by those who seek to have him silenced, I have enclosed the following reading.
Matthew 27:27-36
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and struck him on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off of him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him. And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there;
Now as far as those who chose to follow Jesus here is what the bible says about it and it is only one of many accounts that state the same thing.
2 Timothy 3:11-13
Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall grow worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
Now as far as believing what was written in the book for the times, that’s why I brought out George Washington. He too was only written about in the books for the times and yet we believe in him and all he had done so why can’t we believe in Jesus and what he had done?
I am not offended either by your answers I enjoy hearing from other and what they believe in, and I’m not preaching to you either just sharing what I read in the bible with you.
Now about your salivation your family is telling you will go to hell, as far as I know there is only one sin that is not to be forgiven and that is to sin against the Holy Spirit every thing else will be forgiven, but there is one catch you have to accept Jesus as your Saviour.
Romans 10:9-13
That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture says, Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
and last but least in Faith:
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Observe here, 1. The thing described, or the subject spoken of, and that is faith; that faith whereby the just man lives, the apostle here speaks of, though not as justifying, but as it is effectually useful in our whole life, especially unto constancy and perseverance in the Christian profession, which was the great duty urged and enforced in the foregoing chapter.
Observe, 2. The description itself, it is the substance of things hoped for.
1. That is, it is a confident and firm expectation of the good things which God has promised, giving the good things hoped for, a real subsistance in our minds and souls.
2. It is the evidence of things not seen; that is, it evidences the reality and certainty of future things, it realizes the invisible realities of another world unto our minds, and causes us to believe them as strongly as what we see with our bodily eyes.
Learn hence, That a lively faith gives such a reality, certainty, and present being to things hoped for, and yet to come, as if they were visibly seen and actually enjoyed.
Well once more I wish you the best with your search.
