Asithromycin is generic of the Z-pack. Generally it is taken for five days with the first day of 2 doses of 250 mg. It is a long-acting antibiotic that releases over time. It is prescribed to treat sinus infections, bronchial infections, and UTIs and has a good reputation of being generally well-tolerated and effective. It should not be taken with antiacids or calcium supplements as this reduces the effectiveness of the medication (antacids are not medications like prilosec, protonix, prevacid, or nexium). To learn more about this medication you may wish to visit www.fda.gov and click on "Drug" information and search for the medication.

Women are prone to frequent UTIs for many reasons due to the general structure of their body. Antibiotics can be a mixed blessing, they may help alleviate the infection but cause an overgrowth of Candida, which has been linked to increased risks for UTIs. In this fashion, you may wish to take an Acidophilis supplement to help increase the good bacteria to prevent this from occurring. Additionally, it is important to wash after intercourse and to maintain good vaginal hygeine as this is also linked to the increased risk and frequency of UTIs. If you are a frequent bath taker--switch to showers. Some alternative physicians recommend a bath with vinegar. Additionally, UTIs increase the more sedentary you are, so movement is important. Finally, avoid tight pants and non-cotton underwear as this can increase the moisture and humidity in the vaginal area increasing the likelihood of Candida overgrowth and again infection. There is mixed reviews about the usefulness of Cranberry juice in the treatment and prevention of UTIs--what is important is to drink lots of water, lots of water. Finally, if you are getting frequent UTIs you may wish to speak with a urology specialist or your gynecologist.

I would do like the Dr said and take it.. You should know within 24 hrs of taking the medication if its helping or not. All kids are different, some get sick more than others. I have 3 and 1 of mine seems like he's always sick, but the other 2 are pretty healthy. Antibiotics are not a bad thing, a lot of ppl think they can do severe damage but, I had Kidney reflux disease as a child and was on antibiotics every day for 10 yrs... When I went off of them, my body was not used to have to fight off infections, and I had strep throat like 5 times that year, but my body did eventually start building up immunities and today I'm perfectly fine. So if I was on antibiotics for 10 yrs and there hasnt been any damage, then I'm sure it would be completely safe to be on them, even if you're not sure if it's viral or bacterial. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

Azithromycin is a semi-synthetic broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic chemically related to erythromycin. Frequent antibiotic use leads to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic can disrupt the balance of intestinal flora, the "good bacteria" that dwell inside the human digestive system.

There is a natural UTI treatment: mix 2 tbs. cinnamon and 2 tbs. honey with a little warm water and drink. Do this 4 times in a 48 hour period and poof!

Eventually the body may build up a resistance to antibiotics. If this happens the body will not respond to antibiotics, making an infection difficult to treat. Frequent UTI's usually have an underlying cause. This link will tell you about this particular antibiotic.
