Train schedule is right here:

You can go straight to Penn Station that way. Find the subway entrance inside Penn Station and buy a Metrocard for at least $4 (2 rides) get right on the subway. You can take the #1 local train downtown (the 9 train has been discontinued) Get off at the Canal St. stop. That's the corner of Canal and Varick Streets.

Walk east (away from the Holland Tunnel) on Canal about 5 or 6 blocks and you'll hit Broadway (different from W. Broadway) and the center of the shopping area. If you stay on Canal and keep walking east, you will get into Chinatown too.

Check an online street map of Manhattan and you'll understand the walking directions.

From Penn Station you can take the Q or the R to Canal Street or the B or D to Grand Street. Or, since you've never been to New York, take a bus - Get the M20 downtown at 34th Street and 7th Avenue. By taking the bus, you get to see a bit of the Garment District, Chelsea, Greenwich Village and Soho. Get off the bus at West Broadway and Worth Street (ask the driver to tell you when). Make a right on Walker Street, walk to Centre Street and turn left - walk on Centre Street and you'll be in the heart of Chinatown. (Note: the bus is $2 - exact change - no bills - buy a Metro Card for $4 - ask at Penn Station where you can buy one - Metro Card entitles you to two bus rides or one subway and one bus - the free transfer must be within two hours)

Have a delicous and inexpensive lunch at Fuleen Seafood at 11 Divison Street.

Take the train to Penn Station in N.Y. and take the 1 or 9 subway south to the Canal St. station. Bring a large carrying bag.
