The seat: Women are too lazy to put it up again regardless of the fact that their smell lingers longer with it down, it being trapped under the rim of the seat!
The lid: A different matter altogether. It's either down to make the WC look nice or to stop snakes etc crawling up! It serves no other purpose.

If it is left up you cant see the pretty seat cover that is on it.
Why should it be left up?
ALl you have to do is return your friend to where he belongs then get some toilet paper and wipe the rim and then with your left hand you flush and with the right hand you put the seat and cover down. Then go to the sink and turn the water on and wash your hands. Turn the water off and dry off your hands. Take a look at your self in the mirror , hang the towel back up , turn off the light and close the door slightly. It is so easy. And all it takes is about 10 seconds if that of your time to wipe the rim and put the seat down and you will always have a clean looking bathroom. Always wipe the rim along with putting the seat down.

Three reasons I can think of:

1) Women sit down all the time, and men sit to poop and stand to pee, so about 75% of the time, you're going to want the seat down.

2) If you are a man and you need to pee, you will be facing the toilet before you start, so you will see if the seat is down and can raise it. If you are planning to sit on the toilet, you will not see if the seat is up, so you may sit on the rim. This is both uncomfortable and unsanitary.

3) Many households keep the lid down to prevent kids or pets from getting into the toilet. Obviously, for the lid to be down, the seat must be also.

It depends how you look on it, and also whether you mean the toilet seat or the lid!!

Some people say that you should always put the lid of the toilet down before you flush it to stop the spatter of water from getting all over the bathroom. Some think it is bad 'feng sui' to leave the lid up as it lets the gremlins out (blah blah blah)

Women sit on the loo when they have wees so it is good manners to keep it down for them, but it isn't a rule that could send you to prison if broken.

In a house full of men, it is probably easier to leave it up as that is what you should do when you point percy, but if you have a woman in the house it does get annoying when she has to dirty their hands each time they want to sit on the thrown by putting the seat down.

Basically it only really boils down to hygeine and manners.

It's supposed to keep the germs in. My dog didn't agree. If the water in her bowl was more than 30 minutes old and someone had left the loo door open she would go in there, lift the lid and drink from the WC. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, 'teeth marks on the lavatory seat.'

there would be absolutely nothing wrong with leaving the seat up... if you guys would wipe all the pee-pee dribbles and splashes off of the rim of the bowl after every use. but you dont. so it looks NASTY

also, why is it that 50% of everyone answering don't even take the time to read and see that he's asking about the toilet SEAT and not the LID... for christ's sake

Imagine you had a nice strong curry last night, and it's done its work! Now, it's morning, you feel sleepy, but the toilet is calling you (or you will soil the sheets). Still sleepy, you run to the loo and unless I'm mistaken, guys sit on the toilet too, you sit on the loo but you had left the seat up the night before....now, how are you going to call the fire brigade to get your *%^&&£ out of there?

To prevent a woman's behind from touching the rim or cold water! Have you ever sat down when the seat was up? Not fun my friend. Why should it be left down? Convenience for women I suppose, we have to sit on it EVERY time we go to the bathroom.

According to a friend of mine who is a bit of a Fen shui freak, she says the toilet seat should be down to stop all the luck going out of the house.

I live in Spain and we always leave the toilet seat down to stop mosquito's from lurking in the water and then when you least expect it, they pop up and bite you on the @rse or anywhere else they take a fancy to. This is absolutely true.
