When you stain wood trm and quarter round, should you just use stain, or a combo stain and poly, or stain first, then poly? Or does it depend on the area.

stain first then poly, unless you want the natural color of the wood then just use poly.....but i always stained the wood the color of my choice and then used poly. to get the shinny effect and also good for protecting the wood from scratches and scuffs

A stain is for coloration only. A lot of professionals use combo stain and varnish for speed and ease and you might well consider using it. Hit your local paint/hardware store and look at some of the samples of wood with the different finishes to see if you are happy with the look. Personally, I stay away from the water based poly since I feel it raises the grain of the wood more than oil based. Just my humble opinion.

Pigment stains are just chunks of color suspended in a small amount of binder, it provides no real protection from wear, and if it is not covered with some type of finish coat it will rub off quite easily. You can apply the stain either as the first coat, or as one of the layers after the first coat, or you can leave it out entirely. If you apply it as a first coat it is a stain, but if you apply clear finish first then apply a layer of stain and leave most of it on it is a toner, and if you apply it after a first coat of finish and wipe most of it away, just leaving it in any surface imperfections, you have created a glaze. Whether you decide to stain, tone or glaze the wood, remember to always apply at least one but preferably 2-3 coats of your favorite clear finish, like polyurethane Varnish.
