I am a member as well, in Europe. Here EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE, has only heard about polygamy. I get constant questions about how I feel about sharing my future husband with other women. I think the biggest issue is that it once was practiced, and people honestly believe it was not really given up. Then there are the Warren Jeffs of the world and the RLDS religion, which everyone out here confuses with being a part of the LDS religion. It is annoying, however, a lot of people here also just think LDS is an American religion, and that no one in Europe could possibly practice it. Just some of the things we need to teach and try to get understanding about.

The main reason is Utah's decision not to prosecute polygamy. The result has been a tenfold increase in polygamy in the last 50 years, with over 60,000 people in Utah in polygamist relationships (which represents a significant 5% of the Utah Mormon population). Add to this the big news items where polygamist child abuse scandals dominate the headlines as well as HBO's "Big Love" and it's not unreasonable for people to come away with the perception.

Just last week there was a news story about Warren Jeffs who is a polygamous LDS preacher. Joseph Smith was a polygamist, and encouraged the practice among his church members. God's laws are eternal and if you are saying that LDS has changed, then you are admitting it was founded by people who went against God. Clean your house and we will stop calling it dirty.

You make it sound like a bunch of crazy people just picked this myth about multiple wives out of thin air.
As the descendent of Charles B Shumway (one of the Council of the 12 of Brighmam Young), I beg to differ. My great-great-grandpa had 4 wives. You all DID used to support that until God changed his mind and let the President of the church know---JUST in time to make statehood!

And I've lived in a Mormon Enclave in California and seen second wifes and husbands that vanish for almost half a year.
Yeah, it doesn't mean it's offical, but it does happen.

It's the same with everything! Once something is stigmatized by an event (mostly a bad one), they are forever associated with that bad event. It's not fair, but it's the human condition. Ignorance plays a HUGE role.

Most people who haven't already found religion don't care to learn about religion.
Most people who have already found religion don't care to hear about other religions.
Every country has a primary religion. Anything but is considered a cult. According to society anyhow.
It is your belief. Cherish it.
