At work the other day a few co-workers were candidly mentioning that rather than take the time and effort to connect personally with family members, they find it easier to give expensive gifts to "buy them off". I think I've done this in the past too, now that I think about it. Do you ever do this? It seems to be an acceptable practice.

In my family we only give presents to children. The rest of the family just brings stuff to the pot luck dinner.

If only it were that easy...lol

Actually, I love spending time with SOME of my family. The people that I am not close to, I simply do not visit with over the holidays. I have a few uncles whom I choose not to see because I do not think their choices are acceptable for my daughter to be subjected to. My job is to protect my child, not to visit family that I am uncomfortable around.

In my family we are raised that gifts are not what its all about. Its a time to share with your family and really connect with them. Family is all we have and should be important to spend time with them. I am sure we have all done this in past times, but going forward we should try our best to make the time to spend with our family and live life to the fullest. You are not guarenteed tomorrow and that expensive gift will not show them you love them but your time will!!!

Merry Christmas to you!!!

In my line of work this will be the third of five Christmases I'll have spent on a different continent as my family. I would much rather be with them.
