Catholics are Christian. The three major Christian sects are Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. I guess you're asking what the difference is between Catholics and Protestants. There are many, and naturally it varies depending on which sect of Protestantism you're talking about. Generally, these are the big ones:
1. Catholics hold the pope as Peter's succesor and head of the Church; Protestants generally don't have much Church hierarchy.
2. Catholics believe that when searching for Truth, one should look to Scripture and Tradition; Protestants believe you should only look to Scripture.
3. Catholics believe that to reach heaven, one must have faith and good works; Protestants believe one only needs faith.
4. Catholics pray to Mary and the saints (not worship them); Protestants pray only to God.
5. Catholics have reconciliation through a priest; Protestants believe the priest is unnecessary, and it can be direct with God.
6. Catholics believe that the bread and wine actually turn into the spirit and essence of Christ; Protestants believe it is merely symbolic.
7. Catholics believe in Purgatory; Protestants don't.
8. Catholic Bibles include 1st and 2nd Maccabees, Baruch, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, and sections of Esther and Daniel; Protestants decided these were not divinely inspired and removed them.

Catholicism is a form of Christianity which began in the 325AD by Emperor Constantine of the Roman Empire. Some say he only legalized it after St. Ignatius created it in 107AD, Either way, doesn't matter. What does matter is that Catholicism reigned until 1517AD when Martin Luther put the old Kibosh on that by nailing his 95 protest (hence, the name Protistan)theses of contention on the Wittenberg Church Door.
Luther's ideas where inspired by St. Augustine, The appastle Paul, probably the J-man himself . Some of the philosophical arguments he chose where the role of women, Money distribution etc. He also shinned light on the fact that all Bibles where written in Latin which none but the Priests and higher-clergy could read which gave them much room for interpretation when dictating the "Veritas" of a matter but, who else was going to argue truth with The Church whom at the time where practically royalty.
So, basically Catholic Priest could make up rules and traditions such as offering alms to take away sin, Many traditions still remain today that have absolutely nothing to do with the Bible for instance, confession and silly costumes as if we still live in the worst period in recorded history the Midievil period or Dark ages when the Catholics prevailed. However, now there are all kinds of Christians most denominations are protistant such as the Lutheran,Calvinist, Congregationalist, Episcopalians, Penocostlol, Methodists, Presbyterians, quakers, Shakers, Anibabtist, Puritans, Morovians, Menninites, Amish AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND ON .....................Hope that helped.

As far as I can tell, the difference is a lot of tradition and ceremony. The other sects of christianity haven't entirely escaped the tradition, but it's not nearly as heavy as catholocism has. Catholics also confess their sins to a man they call "father" who gives them penance, then there is the Purgatory with the different "levels" of hell, and also Catholics venerate and pray to ordinary people the church has sainted.
Catholocism seems all around to be more orthodox.
I'm not a catholic, nor have I been. I am also not a christian. But that seems to me to be the difference.

Several centuries ago; there was the Christian reform movement. where a great number of people left the church because they could not find scripture to confirm some things the Catholics were teaching.
Confession to the priest
the trinity of God
Infant Baptism.
Purgatory
and a lot more.
They left the church, and started other religions such as Lutheran, Church Of Christ, universalists. Anglican, Calvinists, Congregationalists, etc.
Still today these splinter religions are called protestant because they protested the dogma of the Catholic church, and did something about it. they searched the scriptures and their hearts and LEFT the Catholic faith.

ALL of the early Christians were Roman Catholics although the term did not come into use until Rome had been established as the center of the church rather than Jerusalem or Antioch.
Those simply called Christians today only find their foundation back to the 1500's or later. The Assembly of God church, for example, can only date itself to 1914 and attributes its foundation to a person -- not Jesus the God-Man. After all, Jesus did not walk the earth with his apostles in 1914!!!!!
Catholics do NOT worship Mary....they greatly revere her for her huge stepping out in faith in accepting to become the mother of God. Would YOU have believed the angel? Would YOU have said yes to an unplanned pregnancy when the penalty -- if found out -- was death by stoning by the townspeople? If not for the yes of Mary, we would have NO Jesus!
I wonder why so many Protestants accept Jesus as their brother -- but refuse to accept His mother as THEIR mother? Makes no sense to me.....

Roman Catholics are Christians. the only major differences in any religious Belief System and another are the NAMES they refer to GOD as along with the differences in the Rituals and Ceremonies which are used to Adore, Honor, Worship, Praise, Pray to and Petition, Thank, Etc. Etc. GOD. GOD, himself is to big to be in only one place and there are many paths and ways one can take to arrive at ones destination. one can walk, ride a bike, ride a motorcycle, take a train, a bus, a plane, a ship, etc. etc. and still arrive at their destination. getting to the destination is the important thing --- not how

The many differences are doctrinal issues. The Catholics believe that Jesus is their Savior and so do the Christians, By the way, Catholics are Christians because of their believe in Christ. But I do understand what you are asking. The Catholics focus on Mary is not scriptual. No where in the Bible does it say to ask Mary to ask Jesus in our prayers, in fact, in Deut. 18:9- we are prohibited from speaking with the dead and Mary died. Also in 1 Timothy 2:5 the Bible says very clearly that there is but one intercessor or mediator between God and man and that the is man Christ Jesus. Although, the Catholics believe Mary ascended into heaven like Jesus, again totally not scriptural. In First Timothy 4:1 we are warned against doctrines of demons in the last days, such as forbiding to eat meat and forbiding to marry. And what a probem this has caused for the Catholic Church with the scandal with the priests. Also, if you look at the 10 comandments in Exodus chapter 20, the Catholics have taken out the one about not worshiping graven images, i.e. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe and the various saints. (By the way, the Bible says that if we are part of God's kingdom through belief in Christ, then we all are the saints of God.) Getting back to that commandment, they still needed to present 10 of them, so they took another one and split it into two. Not a wise choice, as the Bible strictly prohibites us from changing the Word of God to suit our purposes. Religion is manmade and thus not perfect. Our belief in Christ Jesus is what matters. Remember before accepting what any of the Christian (also Catholics) teach or present to you, check it out to see if it's in God's Word (His owner's manual for us). Accept the good and spit out the bad. May God Bless You in your search for truth. Ask the precious Holy Spirit to teach you all truth for that, the Bible says, is one of His main functions in our lives.

Catholics believe that salvation is by works...by being good. And by confessing their sins to a priest. We confess our sins to God not to a human being. No where in the Bible did any one ever go to one of the disciples and confess their sins and get forgiven. If we can work our way into heaven or pray some one into heaven then what did Jesus die for? Why did Jesus have to die if confessing our sins to a human being can get us to heaven? The also believe in purgatory and limbo which is also not supported in the Bible. They also took the KJV Bible and changed it to fit their doctrine. Real Christians know it is by faith that we are saved. That we confess our sins to God not some human being. And that there are only two places we can end up after we die. Either we end up in Heaven or Hell....there's no third option. There is no Limbo, any baby or child who dies before they have reached the age of decision goes to heaven. Only those who have rejected Jesus Christ as their personal Savior go to Hell. A baby never got the chance to reject Jesus Christ therefore, they go to heaven. The Bible also says that those who go to Hell will vividly remember the day they rejected Jesus Christ. Catholics baptize babies when there is no place in the Bible where a baby was baptized. Baptism is performed AFTER a person accepts Jesus Christ as their personal savior and no one can accept for you. Your parents can't accept Jesus for you. It is a personal decision that YOU have to make for yourself. Also, Catholics baptize by pouring a bit of water on the person's head. If it were OK to do it this way then why didn't John the Baptist do it that way? It would have been much quicker and easier if he had just lined every body up and poured water over their heads. Baptism is supposed to be by total immersion because it represents the death, burial and resurrections of Jesus Christ. When you get dunked under it represents the burial and when you are pulled up again it represents the resurrection.
Catholics also believe in praying to saints when there is no place in the Bible where God or Jesus tells us to pray to saints. Catholics pray to Jesus' mother, Mary, when there is no place in the Bible where we are told to do that. The Bible say that there is only one intersessor between man and God and that is Jesus Christ.
Also, Catholics use vein reptition in their prayers. They say the same prayers over and over every week in church. This is what the Bible calls "vein repition". Prayer should be from the heart not memorized out of a prayer book.
Catholics use a lectionary to preach from instead of the Bible....they only use a sellect few Bible passages to preach on and forget all the rest of the Bible.
