I don't know about the bread crumbs bit, but unemployed?
It seems that while they were employed earlier on, they did eventually become street corner preachers, and that took most of their time. There is no mention of their being employed during their preaching years. So, yea, they were "self unemployed".
Shows you what happens when some people have way too much free time on their hands...

I know that Jesus was employed as a carpenter with Joseph before making his appearance as the Jesus that we know, as for Muhammad, he worked on caravans for a while then he married a rich widow 15 years older then him and he happily sat after that and had a chat with the Angel Gabriel. When Muhammad's new religion (Islam) was rejected by the Jews, Christians and his own people, he began with a gang of followers to raid caravans and small villages. With the bounty that he collected, he gradually build himself an army and conquered the area forcing everyone to convert to Islam or have their heads chopped off.

Jesus worked for His Father.
Muhammad worked for His uncle.
When Jesus needed food, He took 3 loaves of bread and two fishes, and made enough to feed thousands.
Just like He turned water into wine.
Why would the creator of all things find it hard to make a little food?
Muhammad was introducted by this uncle to a wealthy merchant woman, and he lived with her. No money problems there that I can see.
