(Devil's Advocate again)

from belief.net:

The Gospels according to Matthew and Luke both say that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. According to Luke, Joseph and Mary were from Nazareth but had to travel to Bethlehem to be counted in a census ordered by Caesar Augustus. Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem during this trip. In Matthew, Joseph and Mary are actually natives of Bethlehem, and Jesus is apparently born at home. After Jesus' birth, the family flees to Egypt and then to Nazareth to escape a slaughter of baby boys in Bethlehem ordered by the Jewish king Herod.

There is no record historically of a census ordered at that time. (And there should be, after all, it was a CENSUS).

Also, why do the gospels disagree? I thought there were no contradictions in the bible.

Because they are looking for a census in December of the year 0000?

It is well known that Jesus was not really born in December and probably not in the year 0000.

Okay, to answer the initial question, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Gospels don't disagree on this.

The fact that Mary and Joseph had to travel from Nazareth for the census is akin to us having to travel back to our families' historic homes for a census today (not that we do, but the same notion.) If, for the 2010 census we were suddenly required to do that, then it doesn't matter that I live in Houston now, I'd have to go back to Dallas to be counted.

As for the bit about the census...there's any number of ways to explain it. Arguing it here is futile.

Yes, the census they talk of was after Herod's death and was taken in about 6AD. Interesting inconsistencies
