I think religion can control people but a relationship with God can set them free from life's controlling fears. Jesus said who the Son sets free is free indeeed. Tell me your thoughts. Are you free? Why or why not?

I am free indeed. It is all because of the Lord God loving me enough to send His very best....His Son! I no longer have to rely on the filthy rags of my own (un)righteousness but I'm bought by the blood of the sinless Lamb of God---His name is Jesus!

I think you are misinterpreting the Latin Religare.
It does mean to bind; ( to bind people's minds as you seem to think it does.) It means to bind groups together such as the Catholic church, Islam, Baptists, Judiasm, etc.
This means they share a theology not that their minds are tied and act like a non thinking robot.
