I have recently found out that I have hep c after donating blood, I went to my doctor and they tested my blood. After my results came in they set me up to see a specialist because the hep c came back elevated. But my liver function came back normal what does this mean.

You have the active virus and anti bodies in your system, but so far your liver is undamaged or has minimal damage. Some people carry the disease in thier systems for 20 or more years before it causes liver damage.

Avoid alcohol and stay in good physical shape (normal weight, healthy diet, exercise) so your body is in the best possible condition to fight the virus.

Your doctor may repeat liver function tests at regular intervals for the next year to see if it varies, then go to annual checks as long as liver enzymes are in the normal range. Some doctors don't recommend treatment as long as your liver function is normal.

You probably already know that hep C is transmitted through blood and is not a sexually transmitted disease. Don't let anyone else use your personal care items -- toothbrush, comb, razor, nail clippers, and so on.

Good luck!

It could mean that you are in the beginning stages of the disease and it hasn't effected your liver yet. This could be a good thing because early detection could prolong the effects of coming on full force. You need to figure out how you got it in the first place and also notify the people you have slept with over the last 20 years. It usually takes that long for the disease to show up. Did you have a blood transfusion long ago for something? If not The other ways of contracting it is drug IV use or a partner that was infected and didn't know it who has passed it along to you. The best thing for you right now it to get treated ASAP to better your chances of it going any further. Best Wishes and Good Luck!

Antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis C should be determined on a case-by-case basis. However, treatment is widely recommended for patients with elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels who meet the following criteria[4] :

Age greater than 18 years
Positive HCV antibody and serum HCV RNA test results

in the chronic stage of hep c the liver functions tests tend to oscillate (rise and come back to near nomal ) ,however the virus lives in the liver cells causing their destruction, damaging the liver framework (without any appearing symptoms) leading to liver cirhosis.
