It would depend on what you really want to use it, your budget and riding style.

There are several bikes that can compete in that, but it will finally end up with what you like.

I'm sort of partial to Titus, so I think that a Racer-X is pretty good, or a Turner Flux, Intense Spider.

If you want hardtails, it's hard to resist the alure of titanium, like Dean, Moots or Seven.

My cousin has a steel Soma Groove MTB with a rigid AsOne fork that rides like magic. The geometry is spot on and it's quite inexpensive (not cheap though). Not the ultimate bike but I imagine not far from it.

As far as hardtails go, my Cannondale F700 is pretty good although I prefer the ride of Specialized hardtails.

Not wanting to sound like a smart-**** but it really does depend upon what you gona do with it. There are so many different types now on the market to deal with different terrain its a hard choise. But you are best of going with a good market name that uses named products. This way you can get a good back up when it comes to spares etc which if you do ride off road you will need!!

the best bike is the one you put together yourself as that way you can pick all the bits that you like.
This is however the most expensive way.

I ride a Specialized. I do like the Cannondale as well. But I've finally tricked my Specialized to where I want it. It also depends on where your riding. If your stump jumpin you will need a soft tail. If your just trail riding you will want the hard tail.
