Question about indefinite leave to remain in the UK-when to apply?

I am in the UK on basis of my unmarried partner being european (French). On April first next year, my visa expires. At that point (being 4 years together), i will be eligible to apply for "indefinite leave to remain status". My question is , how soon before April first can i apply ? One month ? three months ? Since i am paranoid of my passport being lost, i will go to the immigration department myself instead of relying on the post ....

I'd say apply at least a couple of months prior to expiration of your visa. Send your application by recorded delivery or deliver it yourself, if you are worried about your passport being lost. HTH : )

Firstly, and do not be offended, but I ave noted a large number of mails here on this subject, and I am starting to think that many of them are bing placed by bogis people, representing groups who want to inflame racism.

Secondly, you say you here, unmarried, to a French person, so EC National, yet my understanding of these things, which is a fair amount, tells me that you would not be here unless you were married or an EC National.

As to what to do, if you are for real, apply well in time, and as it takes three to four months to process,do it sooner rather than later.

i have had the same problem with my wifes passport .i applied 3 days early and it was refused can you belive it?
the best thing is for you to look on the immigration website and they have all the info there but look hard because somethings are not that simple to find on there website.
if you are worried about passport geting lost you can have it recorded or registered to and from the immigration office good luck

do it a month before it runs out

this way they will look upon you as being honest
