Were they so wrong seeing the great nation that was founded on these principles? Now that we are abandoning them are we doing any better or are things falling apart?

That's one of the reasons why the church enjoys burning scientist so much in the past. Nowadays this would not be fashionable so religious fanatics are lobbying to try to stop scientific researches wherever possible.
