Visit one another periodically in person (as much as your finances and time would allow).
Normally, keep in touch via phone, email, real letters (if he's staying at one place for an extended period), and web cams are good too - that way you can see each other as you talk!
My best friend and her fiancee lives in different states... they talk on the phone whilst being on web cams, and they also fly over to see each other once every 2 months. If your boyfriend will go overseas, then maybe meet up every 6 months. I guarantee you, when you see each other after being away physically for so long, it would be very passionate.
I guess the general advise when you keep in touch with your boyfriend via whatever communication means you choose is: to care about his troubles on the other end, have a level of trust in him, and just generally be understanding. Sending him stuff that has your touch in it once in a while is also very nice.

go with him. u kno u want to. or pretend he's away at college and u will c him on spring break. to make him not forget you. once a week or so (no more) send him a hand written letter on personalized stationary with a spritz of some sweet perfume on it.

send him a card a day. sexy ones, funny one, sentimental ones and you can add pics. Phone calls at night so it your voice he falls to sleep to.
