An acquaintance is so depressed about the political situation in her country (The USA) that she is considering denouncing her citizenship and declaring herself personae no grata.

Yes, it is possible ... must be done at a consulate/embassy, in writing.... HOWEVER, it is not recommended ..... this could create some serious problems down the road.

This is something not to be taken lightly ....
She should consult attorneys, and wait for at least a year or two, or more before making such a drastic decision. She will also want to have established citizenship with another country first, also.

Really strongly recommend not do this.

A far better action would be to become part of the solution! Get involved in advocacy groups, in local/regional politics (to start), in other political causes, and help make good changes in your country!!!

it is very possible but i don't think she would be allowed to stay in the USA (if she is still living here), cause from what i know is if you live abroad and you Renounce your US citizenship you're not allowed to come back to the US for so many years.

I was reading the other day that many Americans that have established citizenship in other countries are Renouncing their American citizenship for tax reasons cause the US is the only country that taxes its citizens when they are working abroad.

But the guys are correct, before Renouncing her citizenship she should establish citizenship in another country because how is she gonna travel from one country to the other without any ID or passport?

She can denounce her citizenship as much as she pleases, but must be prepared to find herself on FBI "undesirable" lists.
Your real question, I presume, is whether or not she can renounce her citizenship. I don't see any benefit to that unless she's moving to another country. Don't forget that as a non-citizen she wouldn't be eligible for any social programs, and wouldn't have the legal right to work.

It is legally possible, but the implications can be great, Advise her to take up citizenship elsewhere before she denounces her US citizenship.

Tell her to get the hell out,if you don't like something that is going on in the USA you can fight to change it.As a US citizen you not only have that right you have that obligation. You don't cut and run like a coward. You fight for change and you keep fighting until you reach a compromise.I despise people that say they wish to renounce their country's citizenship. At least in a free nation.I say she needs to just get the hell out of this nation and stay out.I am ashamed for her.

Please encourage this friend to do so as soon as possible and leave my beloved country. We have enough enemies within already.
