Not all advertised insect repelling machines are necessarily effective. The link includes and disputes some of the claims. Devices that lure mosquitoes using carbon dioxide (that mimics human breath?) may have some merit. But raising frogs (that exhale carbon dioxide) may be safer (at home) and more pleasant if you enjoy amphibians, right?

If you mean something like the Mosquito Magnet, I wouldn't recommend making it at home.

The Mosquito Magnet has an LP gas tank and burns the gas emitting carbon dioxide. It also has an "attractant" (octenol) that it sends out that supposedly attracts mosquitos. When they get there, a fan sucks them in.

It does work - we had one and within a few weeks (the length of their reproductive cycle) most were gone.
