My friend told it may be "Madame"?

we don't say Madame to a prostitute anymore. It was ok when brothels were still allowed in France but it was decades ago.
Nowadays I suppose that prostitutes'clients are less formal and address their partner as "Chérie" or "Poupée" or "tu".

The usual term to address a woman respectfully is "Mademoiselle" (Ms.) or "Madame" (Mrs.). The former for younger (originally, unmarried) women, the latter for the less young.

This is unregarding of the woman's activity, the only question being, will your character address a prostitute respectfully ? Otherwise they would probably talk to her without calling her anything, and probably say nothing more than "how much", in which case the standard way of asking is "C'est combien ?"

(Actually so standard that you *do not* ask a woman in France "c'est combien" without very explicitly referring to something... unless you are actually talking to a prostitute).

If I ever would speak to a prostitute, I would probably address her as 'madame' or 'mademoiselle'

If you are looking for translations for the word prostitute: prostituée is the most general word. 'Grue' or 'pute' are slang words!
