Reading the reams of religious garbage in these answers, I can only conclude that believing in a god or gods means you have to leave your critical faculties - the very best of human nature - behind. If a "believer" came to me and said " I believe there may be a god, but beyond that, I admit, I know nothing", I would say "Cool, good for you!" but woah, these religious people!

While I understand your observation, I don't agree with your conclusion. There are some who may have a narrow understanding of their faith or beliefs, or who rightly feel defensive, but lack the communication skills to defend themselves well.
There are some on this forum who are just as "obsessive" about rejecting and attacking spiritual or religious concepts. If you are going to lable one group with a mental disorder you could just as easily lable the other as well.
Anyway the "psychiatric industry" has already got it covered in their so called "Diagnostic" manual (DSM) along with hundreds of other questionable mental disorder "lables".
I think they call it "excessive religiosity disorder". They've also got one for teenagers who argue with authority it's called "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" !

So watch out! This kind of "labling" can cut both ways and in my opinion makes us all slaves and destroys our individuality and freedom which is the best part of life.

There is now a theory studied at universities, that the need for religion may be due to a gene which is active in some people and dormant in others. Those who have the active gene cannot be persuaded by any logical argument.

Have faith brothers. Nobody in the world now or anyone who has ever been in the world knows if there is a god or if there is what sort of force or being that god is. So your guess is as good as anybody's no matter who they are or you are

Yes but unfortunately they can not tolerate any point of view which contradicts their own- this being true of every religion in the world, apart from buddhism.

Yes, only an idiot would believe there is a big magic guy up there in the sky.. what absurd nonsense!!

Actually !! you know what , not having religious belief is a mental disorder. If you don't believe in God or religion do you believe in love, pain , sorrow (all of which you cant see) relationship, Cold, hot, Days , night, stars moon, (which you cant touch) , why you believe when a scientist tells you about a storm, etc etc. who do you believe into. Do you think, do you have ability to think if so think about what i said , where all these things come from... and read the holy book Quran.

Sounds like you listen to the Randy Savage Radio Show, but anyway,

Why are humans the only creatures known to have an idea to ponder if there is a creator? Maybe having faith is actually a mental re-order since it brings peace and purpose and conclusion to a person. Much of that is needed for emotional things a person goes through in life. To bad you haven't given it much thought. Kind of a catch 22 huh.

Depends what you consider a mental disorder. Intellectually immature people tend to think that anybody with a different point of view is crazy.

It must be a mental disorder to believe that all that exists is what we can see with our eyes. We can't deny that there must be other dimensions than the three we are experiencing in this life. Most people know instinctively that there is a spiritual side to their lives.

its defo a mental disorder. if a jesus was alive today people would think he was a nut but because it happened thousands of years ago and wrote about with "thou's and ye's" then it must be true. how an adult in this day and age can believe in walking on water and raising the dead stunts is beyond me. its all about fear of death and some people invent a happy afterlife to buffer their fear of dying. weakminded people need a crutch and what a crutch is a diety watching over you taking you somewhere nice when you die!!

Yes, following it blindly is mental but religious faith can be a good thing also. Helps you in the time of need.
