i mean besides the companies not wanting us to why can't i just wait till a movie comes out on tv then push a record button and then it records the show to memory then burns it to dvd if not directly to the dvd what would it take to rig something up to do this

because the common dvd/cd player units have not yet caught up to the computer based dvd/cd burner technology level yet but there are some units that for around $300.00 can be had at places like CircuitCity, BestBuy, Frys, Wal-Mart etc.. Good luck they can be hard to find just yet. especially since this is the x-mas season supplies are likely to a little tight due to demand. If you have a newer computer with the appropiate after market input/output cards you can transfer your VHS recordings to the computer hardrive (you need lots of hard-disk-drive space to do this; I reccomend no smaller than an 80 gigabyte unit for this type of file transfer copying/burning and or watching and handling.

Yup it is possible but it should be capeable of burning DVD. It is available in market for 150 $

you can its a called a dvd recorder. i have one it records dvd+rw and dvd+r also plays them. u can set it up to record up to 6 hours.
