I think that most intellectuals are atheistic, because few centuries ago many followers of various religions get away from physical, intellectual and spiritual knowledge, to the degree that they condemned or acted against science and technology, which required a high education of man and relieved people from several forms of superstitions and prejudices. Then came a short period of struggling among people of material and of spiritual tendencies in the beginning of the 20th century.
Now, it seems that the materialists have realized the need of spirituality and the ideologists see the benefits from scientific discoveries, then more exchange of views in the world's fora bring our race to a more moderate attitude. People on each side are more knowledgeable about the learning of the other side. I greatly hope we all will soon realize that true science and true religion must go hand in hand for the advancement of all mankind.

I don't think there is any true correlation. I know many very intelligent people that believe various religions. I have tested at the genius level, and I am definitely not an athiest. Be wary of statistics and surveys. With a carefully planned question, asked in the right place at the right time, you can get whatever results you want. It's an art, not a science.
I suggest you check out websites for creation science groups. The information is quite interesting, and comes from people very high in science and education circles.

without a doubt yes, and a few Pagans, but most Pagans are embracing christianity and its gross. Ive seen studies that show the bible belt has a lower IQ than the rest of America and im inclined to believe those studies are accurate by my own experiences, also if people did another survey on school children and college/ University men and women and they did it on religion, thier personal IQ and some other factors they would conclude that atheists and agnostics are much smarter than a christian or muslim, with Buddhists it might be a tie because some atheists practice Buddhism. Pagans it might be higher or lower im not sure about the results for them. Also research MENSA i bet you not one member is a christian.

Yes and no. I think religion vs. non-religious comes down to how you have been trained to interpret evidence, and if you've been trained a certain way, it tends to stick with you.
That said, I think atheists/agnostics are more likely to gravitate towards academic field because of the way they interpret evidence, not the other way around.

Not really. There are lot of smarty pants on far right in the country. I think someone may have impression that they're more likely to be atheist because ones who are are much better at articulating their opinion than others.
