They both have different purposes as well as missions. The modern United States Army has its roots in the Continental Army which was formed on June 14, 1775, before the establishment of the United States, to meet the demands of the American Revolutionary War. Congress created the United States Army on June 3, 1784 after the end of the American Revolutionary War, to replace the disbanded Continental Army. However, the US Army considers itself to be an evolution of the Continental Army, and thus dates its inception from the origins of the Continental Army. Marines have always been around in the history of Naval combat. Marines were the protectors of the ships basically. A good view of this is in the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. The naval Marines wore the traditional U.K. red coats and carried muskets. Later when the U.S. formed its navy it used the U.K. as its basis. Originally organized as the Continental Marines on November 10th, 1775 as naval infantry, the Marine Corps has evolved its mission with changing military doctrine and American foreign policy. Owing to the availability of Marines at sea, the Marine Corps has served in every American armed conflict including the Revolutionary War. So it all depends on who you ask is the best. Ask a Army 11-B, they will say they are the best. Ask a Marine 0311, they will say they are the best. I say that they are both the best because they are American Soldiers.

There's no harder or easier between Army and Marines. Every branch obtains a certain type of training depending on the mission they are intended to do. Now about the fighting, the Marines are usually the first guys in, they prepare for the Army to come in

Yes the Army Infantry is just as good as the Marine Infantry. Each Branch though has different roles. In my Opinion though the Marines have better Shooters. That is because the Marines stress shooting fundamentals more than the Army!! The Army Infantry is better able to handle larger offenses than the Marines though.

Marine Infantry is better for littoral combat, amphibious landings and light intensity conflict operations. Army infantry is better for high intensity conflict heavy maneuver combat operations. They are trained to be different things.

The Marines are smaller which means they can be more selective in personnel and training. The Army is larger and thus cannot be as selective or engage in more rigorous training as the Marines. However, after Iraq new soldiers or Marines are lietrally getting on the job training under fire so one can say they are dead even in experience and training.

I would have to say being a former Army grunt that Army infantry leads the way. Yes Marines go in first usually, but usually side by side with the U.S Army Rangers. The Army has 5 different infantries; Regular Infantry, Airborne Infantry, Air Assault Infantry, Green Berets, and Rangers. They even have the top secret Delta Force.

Man is GAH long winded. Taking about the Revolution; Blah, blah, blah.
In the Marines we are trained to do more with less. People say you should join the Army because they have more of the newest fanciest gear. They, the Army infantryman, have come to depend on this to accomplish the mission. And different missions you ask? Not that different. Take a Company, a Platoon, a Squad and kill all the emeny you contact. Sounds like the same mission to me.
If you think the rich kids in rich high schools play better sports because they always have newer pads and uniforms and manicured kept fields, and nicer gyms, then believe in the Army. If you think that to win in anything; football, boxing, and combat, takes skills and HEART, then you'll believe more in Marine infantry.
By the way, I wouldn't stand in front a US Army infantry unit and call them weak. They are the best trained and equipt Army in the world and will squash you like a bug in an instant.

In general they have different jobs...the Marines "take" things and the army "holds" things. In other words, the green machine is a good garrison for the stuff left standing after the marines blow the hell out of it. That is a generalization though, the Army saw plenty of action too.
The short answer is, It depends on who you ask : )
