Apparently it's real, and you can overcome it by getting some expensive (there's a surprise....!) lamps specially made to give off the same light frequency as daylight.

SAD is real and there are some pretty simple steps you can take.

First of all invest in an alarm clock which works by introducing light gradually therefore waking you up in a more natural way. There are loads of them on the internet.

Secondly, get a light box and some broad spectrum dayight lightbulbs and use them daily.

Make sure you get out in daylight as much as possible by taking a walk at lunchtime and spend plenty of time outdoors at the weekends. Take exercise daily.

Eat a great diet of wholegrain cereals, fruit, vegetables, good quality protein, fish, nuts and seeds and drink two litres of water per day.

Consider taking St Johns Wort.

I think I have it too but I have never been diagnosed. I started feeling low around the beginning of Dec this year, and expect it to carry on until early March. A lot of people have put good suggestions on this site. I find I need to go out into daylight for at least half an hour. I need plenty of fruit and veg. I also need to slow down a bit and just accept it. I do not take too many things on.

Yes, SAD is real. And many people are affected by it (its why suicide rates go sky high in winter. It can't "cured", but it can be dealt with and minimized.. it is usually an undercurrent for a depression sufferer. If you can't find a way to bring your thoughts out of the bleakness- may I suggest seeing a counselor, and just talking about where your thoughts and feelings are going. They should be able to help you feel yourself again.

Happy trails.
