For secular purposes -- the people you wanted your child(ren) to end up with if the parents died. Did any likely relative start looking like a bad idea for some reason? Or simply not want to? Etc, etc.

your are so smart to look ahead. American health is on the decline and there is a huge shortage of fosterparents in my town. (Meth is a lg. contrib..) When and if your child/ren need a backup, It should be you who decides. Godparents are the folkes who can afford to care for youy teeny peeps. Not just financially. So, you probably do not want to think about this just now but keep it in mind. An insurance policy is not a bad idea if you do it in a way that the babies profit and not the provider. I hope you never need it. xoxoxoanother mommy worries.

I didnt choose any for my kids becuase it turned into fights everytime I turned around. I had people saying this and doing that. I had enough dint pick them because if My Husband and I were to die, Godparents wouldnt matter. They would go to my parents.

Choose carefully. My husband and me choose his brother and his wife because they would be the best. However, for our second baby we keep arguing about who to have, he wants his younger brother only because we are godparents of his baby and he is very immature and wouldnt be the best role model for our child but he doesnt see that.

We chose close friends of ours who would respect our priorities, but also friends who would be interested and willing. One person who had been named at the beginning moved out to LA, and in the acting world began using drugs and such. He is no longer our child's godparent even though we still love him dearly, and he understands. We don't want to burden someone who isn't prepared to parent, anyway. We did not choose our parents because we felt that it would be too much of a burden, and also would interfere with the special relationship grandparents get to have with their kids. My folks are raising my niece and nephew, and though they love them very much, they lament having to be their parents instead of their grandparents, feeling that they are missing out in many ways. I wouldn't want to add our three kids to that stress, nor put my kids in that situation with either set of grandparents.

Choose the people that you know will raise your children like you would want. Talk to them first and find out their feelings. It's a big responsibilty to raise someone's child.

with my first born, well those two close close friends of mine who were perhaps the only ones who never thought of abortion as an option. and now that my daughter is 3,even if she seldom sees her 2 godparents, she somewhat has this connection and fondness of them.

You can choose whoever you want. My girls' godparents are my sister and her husband because my kids adore them and vice versa. But you could choose your friends, cousins, etc.
