Do you think the government has some secret serum that prevents the militray from thinking? Sunburns happen. We've been in the Middle East since 1980 for Christ's sake! I think the medics have treated a couple of sunburns in that time. Its when you, through negligence, allow yourself to be severely sunburned (blisters, fever, etc) and it interferes with your normal duties that you get legal action.
Military members are allowed to think and believe anything they want. Care has to be taken when making public statements. Any statement made by a military member could be misconstrued as support by the military for that statement. So, anything said to the media, or whoever, has to be phrased in such a way that it is clear that it is the individuals opinion and not the opinion of the U.S. government. That is why the military has trained professionals for that. Its really difficult to hold a rational conversation with a reporter when you have to think carefully about every phrase.

Military members can and do get sunburns, it's when the sunburn interfere with the work that it can cause problems. Intentional injuries to avoid work is where the problems start. Under Article 115 of the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) Malingering is the article used for conviction of self-injury.

I always wondered why we were not aloud to get sunburns while I was in the Army. And we had to wear long sleeves all year long.

Yes, sir! they do! When you sign on the line, you sign over alot of rights thats an average citizen takes for granted. But I guess it doesn't stop us from still being individuals, without that we wouldn't be able defend K-Mart.

It's not that their bodies "belong" to the government, it's that they have the responsibility to maintain their ability to train and/or work.
