When I asked "What are shotgun cartridges made of?" I should have been more specific; all I'm not sure about is tha base, which at one time was brass, now isn't. Exactly what metal - or alloy - is it usually? Thanks for your answers. I've been a shooting man since 1961 (age 14), so best wishes to all you kindred spirits!

Brass and brass coated copper are still used. Steel and Nickle plated copper and a steel/tungsten alloy show up now too. I have some Steel 8 guage that are almost completely metal, only the tip of the casing is plastic.

John, it's brass, they never stopped using brass, they do make an all plastic and a few companys produce a nickle plated base, there's also a few who produce a steel case. But the higher quality ammo still uses a brass base for the shells.

Allot of the ammo makers are using soft steel for the lower casing on shot gun shells now. Most of the better grade ammo are still made of brass or a mixture of brass and other cheaper metals so it doesn't rust or corrode.

If its silver-colored, its steel.

If its brass colored, its brass. They still make brass bases on many shells. Winchester AA, Remington STS, and Remington Express hi-brass magnum just to name a few.
