I have connected up my 42" plasma to dvd player using component cables and was looking at the settings. Which would be better, using progressive scan or interlace?

Progressive Scan is better.

Without getting too technical, Progressive scan will scan across all the vertical lines once and then again. Interlaces scans over every other line and then goes back and scans the in between lines. The former results in a clearer picture. Honestly, not everyone sees the difference unless they're very close and on an extremely big TV, but in case someone does, you would go with Progressive scan. HDTV order goes 720p, 1080i, 1080p.
