My cat is 15 years old and has recently lost the majority of his hearing and some of his sight. Since this has happened he has started going to the toilet inside the house. This has never been a problem before - any advice?

Hi Peter...senior cats who suddenly have accidents could be indicative of underlying medical problems such as hyperthyroidism or chronic renal failure (CRF). It certainly would be advisable to consider having a veterinarian evaluate his health to catch this early since they can be managed. Both diseases are common among senior cats, but again if not caught early enough can be fatal.

Get him a "Cat box" and consider him a house cat, if he is a nice cat your in luck. You might try "Seeding" the new cat box
and put it in an area where the animal will have some privacy
and feel sheltered when doing his "duty".
Any cat that has been an "Outdoor cat" will have a hard time
becoming a "House cat" especially after 15 years, but you owe
it to your pet to try. If the cat does it by a door it's trying, if it's in front of the sofa, well.......he asked?
Tide soap powder placed on the "Accident area" will help to keep
him away from the same spot again. (vacumn up when the cats
not around)

Guess i came to the right question. Its very sad to say but your cat is not in good condition. once a cat loose hearing and sight, and finds and drink water from any place that means the cat ribs are failing. It also means that no matter how much water the cat drinks the cat will feel dehydrated and constantly keep drinking water. Yesterday i had to take my cat to get put to sleep b/c she was really suffering. the symptoms that your cat have is the same my cat was having. if your cat fur is no longer health looking, weight lost, lack of eatting, sleeping a lot then you should really take your cat to the doctor asap

Well there is not much you are going to be able to do about that, he is old and it is bound to happen, the main thing is that you DO NOT scold him for doing this, Its not something he can control and he is probably as upset as you are about it.

Cats are very clean animals and it is very upsetting fo them to not be able to control themselves, be patent and be loving, try taking him to his box every few hours and that will help, he is at the point that he might not be able to get there fast enough so you can help him there. I hope this helps some, good luck with him...M

Get him a litter tray. Be sure to use wood-based litter because (a) it smells like the great outdoors and cats respond to it and (b) it doesn't go into lumpy clods when they pee on it - it just goes into a sort of powder stuff. I've used it for years and it doesn't smell. Tesco's own make is superb. Happy Christmas!

Get your cat checked out by a vet and maybe get a litter tray! older cats prefer to stay indoors from experience!

make sure that he has a smaller litter box, one that doesn't require a lot of effort getting in and out of. when cats get older it is much harder for them to move around, especially the much older, and hard of hearing animals such as yours.
ps: cherelle that was a horrible comment, you must not be a pet lover

If he has lost his hearing, he may find the idea of going outside and being vulnerable ( he has to sit still to pee after all) very scary.
Or it could simply be old age catching up in every direction. poor thing.
