"Surprise, Alice se retourne et se trouve nez à nez avec une chenille qui fume une pipe fort originale et soufle les ronds de fumée les plus gros qu'Alice ait vus..."

"surprised, Alice turn round and is face to face with a caterpillar who smokes an eccentric pipe and..." and then, I don't know how to translate, sorry but my english is not good.

Missing words: souffle les rondS de fumée - blows smoke-rings. I guess the second missing word is "grandes" - the biggest Alice had ever seen . . .

Something like (remembering that the French often write in the present tense when we would use the past): Surprised, Alice turns round and finds herself face to face [nose to nose, literally] with a caterpillar who's smoking a very quaint/strange pipe and blowing smoke-rings, etc. . .

PS - Just seen Nourita's comments - her English IS good!

Joyeux Noël!

It sounds like the French version of " Alice in Wonderland "
" Aventures d'Alice au pays des merveilles " . It was translated by Lewis Caroll himself and can be order through various book publishers.

Surprised, Alice turned round and found herself face to face with a caterpillar, who wwas smoking a hookah and singing the verses of the [saddest song] which Alice had ever heard.

I think that they have kaleidoscoped the story of the caterpillar and that of the Mock Turtle. You can do your research via the following links:
