The best way to reduce the discomfort is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
but there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other ingredients.
The brands Cepastat and Cepacol are generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Take 20 seeds of black pepper crack them ( do not powder) pour the contents in a vessel add 50 ml of water and boil the contents till it becomes 25 ml ( add 1 pinch of turmeric powder while boiling this will preventing burning) filter the decotion while hot else the oil will be absorbed by the seeds once again. Cool it and then drink the stuff in one gulp. It may burn for few minutes but after that your sore throat is gone .

Ooh, there's lots of good stuff out there.
Try a pure oil called "Thieves". It's a mixture of natural spices. Put one drop on your tongue and swallow it. It's strong and it burns a little, but it helps.
Other things I use frequently are:
- throat lozenges (Cold-EEZE or Ricola work best)
- hot lemon tea with lots of honey
- a tea in the natural food section called "Breathe Easy"
- Theraflu for Sore Throat (the lemon flavored power that you mix in with hot water)
Lastly, make sure you are drinking lots of water and sleeping. Your body needs to fight it off and flush out the toxins. Echinachea also helps.
Feel better!

Make mixture of plain white vinegar about 1/2 cup and a half a teaspoon salt , stir well. Gargle , don't swallow ( Yes, tastes nasty but it works!). Do this a few times. Also Throat lozenges with Zinc and vitamin C help.
