Not exactly, I know there are just different colors to distinguish between regular workers and workers who are at a higher rank, "like building code inspectors, etc."

Depends on country and even company.. I don't think there is any law on what color to wear.
Here is what I was taught
Yellow-Labor / electrical worker
Red-Safety personnel
Blue-Supervisor
White-Management / Visitors

Not too sure, but the white hard hat is usually the foreman, so if you see a white hat, stop doggin' it and get to work.
