Paxil is not a first generation anti-dedpressant. Those are mono-amine oxidase inhibitors ... very dangerous drugs. Paxil is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, a 3rd generation anti-depressant. But the rest is right. You should never quit Paxil cold turkey. Very unpleasant. St. John's Wort can help alleviate some of the unpleasant side effects, and for some people, treats their depression better than Paxil.

Don't stop it cold turkey. This results in serotonin discontinuation syndrome, which can include a set of nasty side effects you don't want.
Talk to the prescribing doc about a weaning schedule - she will have you slowly decrease the medication until you are off of it completely. Paxil is in the group of first-generation antidepressants that can cause serotonin discontinuation syndrome in many people, so don't try doing it yourself.

Under Dr's supervision, you should never just go off any medication without letting your Dr know.

I did this, and its not easy. Go to your doc and he will put you on a plan. I tried to do it on my own and ended up in the ER! Please do it the right way and not the dumb way I did.
